I always look at different cookbooks and links to get an idea of all the different methods people use to make their yummy foods. From youtube, to cookbooks, to blogs, and different cooking sites. And of course family and friends... Then I whip up my own little version and take it from there.
Here are a few of my inspirations besides my mother, aunts, cousins and friends:
A Taste of Puerto Rico by Yvonne Ortiz
I bought this book back in 1997 (I still own the original hard copy), when I couldn't even make white rice. My rice used to come out like snow balls back then. This cook book saved my life and started the foundation of becoming a well rounded cook!
Puerto Rican Cookery by Carmen Abby Valldejuli
This book contains a lot of old school methods in preparing different authentic dishes. I feel that every cook should know the way things were done back when there was no food processor to make it easier to make. My aunt used to cook in a fire pit in the Dominican Republic and she had platano trees growing in her back yard. When I think of how pastels were REALLY made (with no food processor or machinery - just straight grating by hand) you really learn to appreciate food so much more. People put their whole heart into it back then.
Aunt Clara Dominican Cooking
I LOVE Aunt Clara! She's awesome. I love her simplicity in everything she does! Anytime I need a quick reference, I go straight to her website. I have been following her for years and I've never been disappointed. Looking at her food makes me feel warm and fuzzy. Thank you Aunt Clara for keeping it simple and pretty!
